Our Favorite Ikea Hack

June 16, 2021

A lot us don’t have the spacious, stunning mudrooms or entryways that we often see on design shows or in magazines.  Instead, many of us live in homes that have small entryways that lack adequate storage for things like…shoes.  That’s when this Ikea shoe storage cabinet can be a wonderful addition to an entryway.

While this cabinet is super functional, it looks a bit boring and utilitarian.  That’s why if you get out a couple simple tools and “zhuzh” it up – or whatever Carson Kressley used to say on the original “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” – you’ll end up with a striking piece in your entryway that looks custom made!

There are two simple changes to make on this cabinet:

  1. Measure the existing top to the cabinet.  Then visit your local lumber store and select a wood for the new top, cut out a new wood top per your measurements, unscrew and remove the old top, and install the new top.
  2. Swap out the cabinet hardware.  This is such a simple and easy change and it makes such a big difference.

And there you have it!  A great storage unit to throw all the shoes that pile up in an entryway that doesn’t look like it came “off the shelf!”
